Our skin
The skin is an organ like the lungs or the heart - in fact, it is the largest organ in the human body.
It protects our body from environmental influences, dehydration, germs, wind, UV radiation, etc.
Unlike the internal organs, it is unprotected against external influences and is surrounded by a resistant but vulnerable protective layer (the so-called stratum corneum with acid mantle).
Healthy skin provides sufficient protection.
Excessive internal (e.g. overload, hormonal changes) and external influences (UV radiation, smoking, alcohol, too much sugar, incorrect skin care) over a long period of time put strain on the skin.
This impairs the barrier function, makes the skin vulnerable and can react with redness, inflammation, itching or blemishes.
3 rules that improve your skin
1. Less is more
Don't overload your skin every day with a cocktail of active ingredients such as AHA acids, vitamins, retinol, etc.
The skin can't process too many active ingredients in too short a time, and these can be equally aggressive and thus have the exact opposite effect. The solution: fewer products, not more.
Reduce skincare products in general and active ingredients and after a short time your skin will improve.
Additionally , #skinfasting, or giving your skin a break every now and then, is good for it. Try it occasionally, for example, when you're relaxing at home, without using any skincare products at all and letting your skin "work on its own." It can also be an effective way to identify skincare products that irritate your skin and do more harm than good.
2. Moisture & Occlusion:
Sufficient moisture (water, hydrolates , moisture-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin) is the solution.
Adequately moisturized skin is plumper, smoother and can perform its function better, i.e. the skin is calmer with less redness.
The moisture content of the skin is therefore more crucial in the aging process than active ingredients.
However, moisture alone is not enough, because in order to keep the moisture in the skin, substances are needed that bind it, i.e. have an occlusive effect.
High-quality vegetable oils and butters (not mineral oils!) do just that. They form a thin layer on the skin through which hardly any water escapes without clogging the pores.
Note: For oily skin and rosacea, use natural oils sparingly (only 1-2 drops).
3. Protection instead of over-care
Be gentle and loving to your skin:
- avoid aggressive cleaning substances
- Avoid drying care products with alcohol as a second or third ingredient
- no hot water
- no heavy scrubbing & peeling
- Clays gently cleanse and refine the skin
- Always remove make-up in the evening
- avoid makeup wipes
- Don't forget SPF

If you'd like to take a little more time for yourself and enjoy a truly relaxing at-home ritual, then a DIY facial steam bath, for example, with dried chamomile flowers, is a wonderful idea.
This ritual opens clogged pores, removes dirt particles, and gently disinfects them. I use dried chamomile flowers from Morocco. (You can also buy them pre-packaged at pharmacies, for example.)
For the steam bath, pour 1 liter of boiling water into a large bowl. Add 3 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers and let it steep for 5 minutes.
Then, hold your face over the bowl and cover your head and face with a towel. Breathe slowly, close your eyes, and enjoy the soothing essential vapors of the chamomile. Your skin will then be much more receptive to the purifying mask and subsequent treatment.

4. Your lifestyle
If your skin problems don't improve despite changing your skincare products, you should also consider your lifestyle. New skincare products alone won't be enough.
A constantly high level of stress, an unhealthy diet (sugar, dairy products, alcohol) or lack of sleep are all indicators that can have a major impact on your skin health.
As we all know, habits (usually established over a long period of time) don't change overnight. Set small, realistic goals and be patient. Consciously celebrate your small successes, because, step by step and with consistent perseverance, small adjustments can make a lasting, big difference.
